Exchange Student Housing Services

Exchange Student Housing Services offer a limited number of student rooms for exchange students within the programmes of Erasmus, Erasmus Mundus and Linnaeus Palme, as well as for exchange students from partner universities with university-wide bilateral agreements. Note that Nordplus students get accommodation by contacting the Nordplus coordinator at the host department and should not apply here. Independent students and free movers are asked to arrange their own accommodation. See below for more information.

Application for our services

You apply for housing online. See the link for the application form below. You do not have to be academically accepted before you apply, but you have to be accepted before arrival to benefit from our services. Note that there is a great demand for housing and we can not guarantee a room to everyone. The rooms are not allocated by a first come first served basis, but it is important that you apply within the application period. You will be informed about the outcome of your housing application after the application deadline.

Application periods

Autumn term: April 1 - May 15
Spring term: October 1 - November 15

Sharing an apartment

In the area Rosendal I we provide double rooms that could be shared by two students. See more information at the Rosendal page (link to the left).

Accommodation and facilities

Housing for exchange students is provided by the local student housing company, SGS Studentbostäder, but the university will act as host since we sublet the rooms/apartments. Reservations and payments are managed by Guest Services. See the Terms of tenancy (link to the right) for more details. Rent is charged twice per term, according to the Rent payment plan (link to the right).

The accommodations for exchange students are integrated in areas of student housing so there will be opportunities to meet Swedish students in common areas etc.

All rooms come with basic furniture like desk, bookshelf, bed, chairs and lamps, while kitchen utensils, light bulbs, bedding (cover, pillow, linen) and towels are your own responsibility.

High-speed Internet access is included in the rent, but you have to bring a computer.

Accommodation for independent students

Independent students can apply for housing directly at the two local student housing companies, SGS Studentbostäder and Chalmers Studentbostäder. They offer students’ accommodation in various forms ranging from furnished rooms with shared kitchen facilities to apartments with two or three rooms. Make sure to apply in good time since the demand for student housing is very high, especially for the autumn term.

Boplats Göteborg, the marketplace for rental apartments in Gothenburg, advertises private rooms and sublet apartments for students. At their website you will find both ads and general information about student housing in Gothenburg, and you can also listen to some international students living here. Over the last few years, many international students have been successful in finding accommodation through private landlords this way. During the summer period they work intensely to help students to find a place to stay, so do not hesitate to contact them.

Local transportation

The University of Gothenburg is a city university, with several different locations in the city centre. From all our student residential areas you can reach the city centre and the university within 20 minutes, and the local transportation system operates with buses, trams and ferries. The time schedule is very reliable and there are seldom delays. In the city you can walk between most of the departments.

At the Boplats student website you can find a map over the city featuring commuting times to the university from different parts of the city.

There are also several bicycle paths to take you both to and from the schools - you had better watch out in the street corners, if there is not a tram passing there might be a student on a bike!
